Interesting reading on the dangers of corporate research labs.

I’ve been writing LaTeX lately as god^Wknuth intended it, choke full of mathematical goodness. The output is beautiful.

  1. I wonder if the author actually intended to write “panty raid” or if that is a Freudian slip!

    • Since it’s a quote, one hopes it’s accurate.

  2. One thing I discovered when I was playing with TeX and LaTeX is that there is a big gap between what it gives you by default and what it takes to get the beautifully fitted pages you see in Knuth’s books.

    • My old resume started with this prolog:

      \hoffset=-0.25in
      \advance\vsize0.5in
      \nopagenumbers
      \def\br{\hfill\break}
      \parindent0pt
      \parskip0.5\baselineskip plus 1pt minus 1pt

      \def\section#1{\penalty-2000\vskip0.5\baselineskip{\bf #1}\par\penalty10000}
      \newbox\leftbox
      \long\def\table#1#2{{\setbox\leftbox\hbox{#1}\lineskip\baselineskip\lineskiplimit\lineskip\halign{\hbox to \wd\leftbox{##\hfil}&\vtop{\advance\hsize-\wd\leftbox\normalbaselines\relax ##}\cr #2}}}
      \def\ipar#1{\parskip0pt\normalbaselines\advance\leftskip0.5in\relax #1}
      \def\inset#1{\noalign{\ipar{#1}}}
      \def\idt#1\par{\par\penalty1000{\ipar{#1}\par}}

      \vskip\parskip
